Tombaugh, the man who discovered Pluto, was working at White Sands Proving Ground and living in Las Cruces when he made his sighting. July 4, 1950. Daniel Fry, a technician for Aerojet General at the base, walked out past the rifle range at the foot of the Organ Mountains. Then came November 1957. Army military police patrolling the northern range near the old Trinity bunkers reported a huge, bright oval object. The base announced the sightings itself, though a commander named Penney found no physical evidence.
