Lake Champlain's monster has a name. Champ. The earliest printed report came on 24 July 1819, when the Plattsburgh Republican told of Captain Crum's sighting at Bulwagga Bay. In 1883 Clinton County Sheriff Nathan H. Mooney saw it from the New York shore, and many more witnesses came forward. Summer 1977. Sandra Mansi photographed something in the water near Missisquoi Bay. In 1984 dozens aboard the Spirit of Ethan Allen reported bumps on the water, logged by researcher Joseph Zarzynski as a mass sighting. Sceptics such as Joe Nickell and historian Robert E. Bartholomew have examined the legend and its hoaxes.
