Robert E. Bartholomew is a researcher and author who treats many strange sightings as social phenomena. In 1989 he used South Africa's 1914 phantom monoplane wave to test Smelser's theory of hysterical beliefs. Later, he included it in Outbreak! The Encyclopedia of Extraordinary Social Behavior. He also studied Canada's air raid scares of 1914 to 1917, including the Brockville scare, and called them classic examples of collective delusion. In 2013 he published a 1980 letter about the missing negative of Sandra Mansi's Champ photograph. His book UFO Lore covers the Mindalore landing.
