1864. The Tower of London. A rifleman of the 60th Rifles stood sentry by Tower Green. A white figure came towards him. Some say it was a woman in Tudor dress and a French hood. Some say it had no head at all. He challenged it three times. No response. He thrust his bayonet into it. The blade passed straight through, and a fiery flash ran up his rifle. He was found unconscious at his post. Brought before a court-martial, he was saved in most tellings by men watching from a nearby window, among them Captain J. D. Dundas. It is one of the Tower's most famous ghost stories. Yet no record from 1864 has ever been found.
