September 1, 1975. Labor Day, about 8 p.m. Near Noxie, in the timbered hills of northeast Oklahoma, farmer Kenneth Tosh and a friend heard an odd scratching sound inside an abandoned house. In the waning light they walked up to within 10 feet of something. A dark brown, hairy creature, 7-8 feet tall. It growled. They ran. Over the next 60 days or so, no fewer than 24 people said they had seen or heard it. Men fired rifles and shotguns. The creature fled at high speed, seemingly unaffected. Armed hunters combed the hills, reporters arrived, and the Noxie Monster entered Oklahoma legend. Decades later, talk of a hoax surfaced. Nobody ever confessed.

Context

Noxie is a small unincorporated place in Nowata County, near the Kansas line, some 15-20 miles from the county seat of Nowata. In 1915, Crum King was coming home from a dance. Outside his gate stood a hairy, man-like figure, 5 to 6 feet tall, with a chest of about 4 feet.
