April 21, 1977. Dover, Massachusetts. Seventeen-year-old Bill Bartlett was driving along Farm Street at about 40 mph when something moved on a low stone wall. He thought it was a cat or a dog. Then his headlights caught two eyes glowing bright orange. A watermelon-shaped head, bigger than the body. Long thin fingers curling around the rocks. Over roughly 25½ hours, four teenagers in three separate sightings described a small, hairless figure with glowing eyes. Loren Coleman gave it a name. The Dover Demon. Nearly fifty years later, no one has confessed, and no one has explained it.

Context

Dover is a quiet suburb of about 5,000 people, roughly 15 miles southwest of Boston. In April 1977 the students of Dover-Sherborn High School were on spring break. Over about 25½ hours, three sightings would unfold along a line just over 2 miles long. All of them near water.
