Creature record / 1979
July 1979. Ron and Betty Harper found the bark torn from their old oak on Brassknocker Hill, outside Bath. They knew squirrel damage. This was not it. Within about a month, roughly 50 trees in the woods had been stripped. The birds went quiet. Then they left. A driver on a dark road through Monkton Combe saw something bear-like rise briefly on thick hind legs. Its large eyes were ringed with great white circles of fur. Others compared it to a chimpanzee, a gibbon, a lemur. In 1980 police reported a large chimpanzee running around. Nothing was ever caught. The beast simply stopped being seen.
