September 1941. A riverbank house at Ruby Creek, British Columbia. About three in the afternoon, Jeannie Chapman's eldest son ran inside saying a cow was coming out of the woods. It was not a cow. Jeannie saw a gigantic man covered with hair, not fur, about seven and a half feet tall. It advanced directly toward the house. She raised a blanket to screen her children and fled with them downstream to the village. When her husband George came home, the woodshed door was battered in. A barrel of salt fish lay broken open. Enormous footprints covered the ground. They came back every night for a week. Years later, the case convinced John Green to take up sasquatch research.

Context

Ruby Creek sits on the Fraser River, about 30 miles up the river from Agassiz, British Columbia. In 1941 the Chapman family lived on the riverbank beside the railway line. Behind the house lay a fenced field, a potato patch and the foothills. A village lay downstream. George Chapman worked on the railway.
