June 10, 1961. Mount Garnet, a tin-mining town on the edge of Queensland's Atherton Tableland. At 6:30 in the evening, a 63-year-old truck driver named Jones watched something pass almost directly over his house. About 600 feet up. An oval top, a wedge-shaped bottom, and behind it a trail of what looked like black smoke. It made no sound. Eight or nine seconds, and it was gone to the north-east. The next evening, at the same time, it came back. The local police officer who took the report wrote that Jones was "not a crank or crack-pot." The file has rested in the Queensland archives ever since. No explanation was ever recorded.

Context

Early June 1961. Far north Queensland. On June 5, farmers near Millaa Millaa reported an object in the late morning sky, and a senior constable watched it through field glasses for hours. Five days later, about an hour away, it was Mount Garnet's turn.
