April 2007. Cannock Chase, Staffordshire. Near the German War Cemetery, just off Camp Road, a postman on a motorbike saw what he took for a large dog. He got closer. The creature got on its hind legs and ran away. He was not alone. A Cannock scout leader also took it for a huge dog, prowling by the bushes. When he slammed his car door, it reared up on its back legs and ran into the trees. "It must have been about six to seven feet tall," he said. "I know it sounds absolutely mad, but I know what I saw." Neither man was ever named.
The woods of Cannock Chase lie between Stafford and Cannock in Staffordshire. Just off Camp Road stands the Cannock Chase German Military Cemetery, consecrated in 1956 and dedicated in June 1967. It holds thousands of graves of German war dead. In the spring of 2007, people said something else was walking around it.
