July 30, 1994. A Saturday night in West Lothian. Near Armadale, a 27-year-old ScottishPower cable layer named Andy Swan saw something hanging over a field. It was shaped like a Toblerone. About 40 feet long. Two very bright lights at the front. A humming noise. It hovered at around 50 feet and crept towards Blackridge at walking pace. Then the car died. The lights went out. An AA patrol could not revive it. The next morning it started on its own. The Ministry of Defence had an answer. Three RAF Harriers. Sixteen years later, the file went public.

Context

West Lothian is no stranger to strange skies. In November 1979 forestry worker Robert Taylor reported a close encounter on Dechmont Law, near Livingston, and said he had been dragged along the ground by a UFO. From 1992 the area around Bonnybridge, the so-called Falkirk Triangle, lived through a flap of sightings. In the summer of 1994, the road between Armadale and Blackridge got its own story.
