Zeitoun

Place 7 stories, 1885 to 2009

A district of Cairo. On Tomanbay Street stands St. Mary's Coptic Orthodox Church, consecrated on 29 June 1925. In 1968, crowds there reported the Virgin above the church. The last public sighting came on 29 May 1971, and the Coptic Church made 2 April a feast day. Zeitoun became the reference point for later Egyptian cases. Assiut in 2000 was called a follow-on, and the Church counts Shoubra among its approved apparitions beside Zeitoun and Edfu. Around Christmas 2009, during the Warraq apparitions, crowds gathered at Zeitoun again after reports of lights. A tectonic strain theory was later proposed for the 1968 lights.
