August 1997. A village church in the Nile Delta, north of Cairo. Residents said a Muslim caretaker saw it first. Then the crowds came. Thousands of Coptic Christians kept vigil outside the Church of the Virgin Mary at Shentena al-Hagar, from around midnight to sunrise. They described a glowing white silhouette hovering over the church, circling the tower and nodding to the people below. Others spoke of a red star coming down, of silver doves piercing the sky, of flames moving up and down over the tower. Cameras provided nothing. Yet the local bishop confirmed it, and Pope Shenouda III declared the light supernatural.

Context

Shentena al-Hagar is a village in the Birket el-Sab district of Menoufiya governorate. It lies in the Nile Delta, north of Cairo. Its Coptic Orthodox Church of the Virgin Mary has a tall tower, crowned by a big cross. Egypt's Copts knew the story of Zeitoun, where apparitions began in 1968. Church sources would call Shentena "the third in Egypt since 1967".
