Walsh

Person 3 stories, 1920 to 1995

Two different people carry this name in the archive. In County Tipperary in 1920, James Walsh was a 16-year-old farm labourer at a cottage in Curraheen. He said the Virgin Mary had visited him, and that three statues there began to bleed. Dan Breen, sent by Michael Collins, called him a fake. Decades later, on Pemba, the social anthropologist Martin Walsh recorded the Popobawa panic of 1995. That account includes a spinning dog with a police siren on its head, three mob killings on Unguja, and political readings that came only later.
