Templemore, County Tipperary. August 1920. The town hall had just been burned in reprisal for the shooting of a police inspector. Then the statues began to bleed. A 16-year-old farm labourer named James Walsh said the Virgin Mary had visited him. She was troubled by what was happening in Ireland. Statues in his cottage bled. At her request he dug a hole in his bedroom floor, and it filled with spring water. Soon more than 15,000 pilgrims a day were reported in a town the newspapers called "Pilgrimville". The IRA directed the crowds. The police stayed away. For six strange weeks, an informal truce held.
