A ghostly passenger who asks for a ride, then disappears. Folklorists call it the vanishing hitchhiker, a worldwide legend described by Jan Harold Brunvand in 1981. The archive meets it again and again. Commentators placed Maurice Goodenough's 1974 Blue Bell Hill report within it, and Resurrection Mary on Archer Avenue was read as a local form. The Uniondale case on the N9 matched it closely, down to the ghost asking for an address. In 2011 writer Lucia Peters saw its old shape in the ghost passengers of Ishinomaki's taxi drivers.
