Tuesday, August 10, 1976. About 10:30 p.m. A man driving past Resurrection Cemetery on Archer Avenue phoned the Justice police. The caller had seen a girl locked inside the gates after hours. Patrolman Pat Homa searched the grounds with a spotlight and loudspeaker. Nobody was there. Then the flashlight found the main gates. Two bronze bars had been pulled apart. They were scorched, with what looked like handprints pressed into the metal. For decades, drivers on Archer Avenue had told of a blonde girl in a white dress who rode with them and vanished near these gates. The cemetery blamed a truck. The legend has a name. Resurrection Mary.

Context

Resurrection Catholic Cemetery stands at 7201 Archer Road in Justice, Cook County, Illinois. Founded in 1904, it covers 397 acres and holds about 225,000 burials. In 1939, or 1936 by Michael Kleen's count, Jerry Palus danced with a girl at Liberty Grove Hall in Brighton Park and drove her down Archer Avenue, where near the cemetery she asked to get out, saying, "Where I'm going, you can't follow." Then she vanished through the gates, and folklorist Richard T. Crowe, who popularised the case in the 1970s, said Palus recognised "the touch of a corpse."
