swamp gas

Term 9 stories, 1964 to 1973

Two words that became a punchline. Swamp gas was Hynek's explanation for the Michigan sightings of 20 and 21 March 1966 at Dexter and Hillsdale. The press mocked it. Van Horn disputed Hynek on 15 points, and the Mannor family rejected the finding. By 1972 Hynek himself called it the low point of his association with UFOs, a standard humorous synonym for the subject. The reports set the backdrop for later cases that year, from John King's encounter in Bangor to the Fort Smith lights. In 2023, Brian Dunning of Skeptoid argued swamp gas cannot burn steadily as witnesses described.
