October 2, 1973. About 8 p.m. A driver on Bypass 28 in Derry, New Hampshire, saw a bright object hovering over Rainbow Lake. Along the shore, residents who were outdoors saw two. Whitish yellow. About the size of a steering wheel. The pair descended toward the water. Then one fell straight down and splashed into the lake, sending ripples to the shore. The other soared upwards and vanished. Police took more than 40 calls. A rescue boat searched for two hours. Divers went down days later. They found nothing, and the chief called the matter closed.
