A physician in Rio de Janeiro. Dr. Olavo T. Fontes served as APRO's representative in Brazil, and through him several of the country's strangest cases reached the wider world. In 1957 he took up the Ubatuba magnesium fragments, searched for the letter writer and other witnesses, and found nobody. His English-language articles remain the main account of the Gravataí Air Force Base sighting during the 1954 wave over Rio Grande do Sul. In September 1960 he reported the Paracuru landing in the A.P.R.O. Bulletin. Whether he interviewed that witness himself is not known.
