About 21 km north of Porto Alegre sits a Brazilian Air Force base with two names. In 1954 it was Gravataí Air Force Base, the name used by researcher Dr. Olavo T. Fontes during that October's saucer wave over Rio Grande do Sul. Today it is Canoas Air Force Base. In late October 1996, after Haroldo Westendorff's pyramid sighting over Lagoa dos Patos, a sergeant from the base came to Pelotas and spent an afternoon taking statements at the aero club. In 2022, the aviation site AEROIN claimed an F-5 of the Esquadrão Pampa launched from here during the airline pilots' spiralling lights case. The FAB never confirmed it.
