London's police force turns up across more than a century of this archive. In 1872, Inspector Arthur Gedge of its P Division had Peckham scoured during the Peckham Ghost scare. PC Hills later arrested Joseph Munday, 43, in Bath Place, a white smock under his overcoat and peas in his pockets. In 2001, DI Paul Anstee praised London Zoo after the capture of Lara, the Cricklewood Lynx. Then came 2005 and the Beast of Sydenham. The force took Anthony Holder's report seriously. One officer believed they saw a large black cat-like animal, about the size of a Labrador.
