Lake Erie

Place 5 stories, 1892 to 1990

Lake Erie runs through this archive as a shoreline of strange things. Its sea serpent stories reach back to 1793, when the sloop Bay Rat reported one near Sandusky. The monster even earned a name. Bessie. In September 1990, two Huron fire inspectors watched a dark shape, 30 to 45 feet long, lying motionless on the water. On March 4, 1988, the lake's ice shone under a bright moon as the Baker family drove home to Eastlake, Ohio. And in 1967, astronomers traced the Kecksburg fireball to a likely end on its northwestern shore.
