Kaikōura lights

Event 3 stories, 1965 to 2019

1978. Lights over the sea off New Zealand, seen by a cargo crew. The Kaikōura lights became New Zealand's best-known case of lights seen over the sea from the coast. In this archive they serve as a benchmark. The Karekare Beach lights of 2019 invite the comparison, though the two are not connected. The green object reported by cargo 737 pilots near Jeffreys Bay in 2016 echoes them. So does Qantas Flight 363 and its seven contrails over the Tasman Sea in 1965, one of the quieter airliner puzzles of the region.
