Monday night, 12 December 2016. A Boeing 737 freighter was flying at about 3,000 feet over the Indian Ocean, some 10 nautical miles off Jeffreys Bay, South Africa. Then the two pilots saw a glowing green object climb past their cockpit. It rose to the clouds about 1,000 feet above them. It turned. It came back down at high speed, past the cockpit again, towards the sea. They reported it to Port Elizabeth air traffic control. The National Sea Rescue Institute was called in and kept watch through the night. A flare was ruled out. Nothing was found. In the NSRI's own words, the incident remains a mystery.

The aircraft was over the Indian Ocean, roughly 10 nautical miles off Jeffreys Bay in the Eastern Cape, at about 3,000 feet. A layer of cloud hung some 1,000 feet above it.
