Big Bird

Term 3 stories, 1976 to 1983

A name, and a creature, that the lower Rio Grande Valley gave to its flying monster. Mid January, 1976. In Raymondville, Armando Grimaldo heard great flapping wings and was attacked, as recounted in The Rio Grande Valley "Big Bird" Wave. San Benito officer Arturo Padilla described a white, silently gliding bird with a wingspan of about 15 feet. On February 13, 1976, the Valley Morning Star declared the legend dead. It was not. Teachers south of San Antonio saw pterodactyl-like animals that month, and the story echoed again in The Harlingen Ambulance Pterodactyl in 1983.
