A newspaper of the Rio Grande Valley, and a recurring voice in its strangest bird stories. In 1976 the Valley was gripped by reports of a giant flying creature. San Benito officer Arturo Padilla described a white bird gliding silently, with a wingspan of about 15 feet. Wildlife experts suggested a stork, then a great blue heron. February 13, 1976. The Valley Morning Star ran the headline "Legend of Big Bird is Dead." The story did not stay dead. In 1983 ambulance driver James Thompson told the paper of a creature on Highway 100 that flapped its wings just enough to lift off the grass.
