Arizona. Around midnight, August 1962. A man on the night crew at a Titan missile complex near Oracle stepped outside and saw a brilliant light. It kept growing. Then he realised it was coming down directly over the site. He fetched a colleague. The light grew so large that both men were frightened. They went back inside and phoned Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. Two jet interceptors arrived, and the object took off fast toward the north. Minutes after the jets left, it came back. It descended toward the silo once more, then rose straight up and dwindled to nothingness. Every witness said it looked like the full moon. None of them was ever named.

Context

In 1962 the Air Force was building Titan II launch complexes around Tucson. The 390th Strategic Missile Wing at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base had been activated on 1 January. One of its sites, complex 570-1, stood some 27 miles north of Tucson, near the town of Oracle. It was not yet operational. According to researcher Robert Hastings, the first Titan was not installed in its silo until December 8, 1962. On the night in question, the silo was empty.
