Autumn 1984. Ken Webster, a teacher, and Debbie Oakes moved into Meadow Cottage in Dodleston, a village southwest of Chester. Soon tins were stacking themselves into towers. Footprints with six toes came and went. Cold gusts moved through the rooms. Then came the messages. On a BBC Micro borrowed from Webster's school, someone began writing in strange, old English. The writer signed as L.W., claimed to live in the same house in the 1540s, and accused the household of stealing it. Later a second voice joined in. It called itself 2109. Over some 16 to 18 months, about 300 messages arrived. Hoax, or contact across time? The debate continues.

Context

Autumn 1984. Ken Webster, an economics teacher at Hawarden High School, moved into Meadow Cottage with partner Debbie Oakes. The cottage stood in Dodleston, a village southwest of Chester, close to the border between England and Wales. A college friend, Nicola Bagguley, lived there for a while too. At weekends Webster often brought home a BBC Micro borrowed from the school's IT department.
