January 2, 1978. About eleven at night. Four young men were driving home across Simonswood Moss, a flat, boggy stretch of West Lancashire. A wrong turn put them on a narrow dirt road beside a ditch. Then a figure appeared in the glare of the headlights. Seven foot tall. Eight meters ahead. It wore a white fluorescent one-piece suit with boots. It had no discernible facial features, very short arms ending in claws, and a box on its chest with two flashing red lights. It took two steps towards them and stopped. The men did not wait to see more.
Simonswood Moss is flat, boggy and isolated. It lies in West Lancashire, between Kirkby, Rainford and Skelmersdale, and most accounts place the encounter at Rainford, the next village over. Monday, 2 January 1978. Around 11:00 p.m. Four young men were driving home through the mossland when they realised they had taken a wrong turn. They were on a narrow dirt road bordering a ditch.
