August 15, 1988. The Feast of the Assumption. Thousands of pilgrims gathered on the grounds of St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Lubbock, Texas. For months, three parishioners had said Mary was communicating with them. As an outdoor Mass stretched into the evening, the crowd began crying and screaming. They said they saw Mary and Jesus in the sky. Some said the sun danced and pulsated. Others watched their rosaries turn to gold in the twilight, then back to silver. A church committee later looked into it. It found no evidence of deception. It also found no convincing sign of the miraculous. The witnesses, it said, were sincere.

Context

It began in February 1988. Msgr. Joseph James, pastor of St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Lubbock, Texas, had just come back from a pilgrimage to Medjugorje. Soon after, members of the parish's charismatic prayer groups said they were having experiences of Mary. Some spoke of the smell of roses.
