January 1765. William and Mary Ricketts moved into the old Tudor manor at Hinton Ampner, in Hampshire, with three young children and eight servants from London. Soon the nights filled with noise. Doors slapped shut with vehemence. Footsteps plodded towards the bed. Silk rustled in empty rooms. A nurse saw a gentleman in a drab-coloured suit walk into the yellow bedroom. A groom saw him in the great hall. In the end Mary's brother, Captain John Jervis, kept armed watch through the night. He heard groans and a sound like a pistol. He found no cause. He told his sister to leave. She did.
