Agrinio truck engine failure under a glowing object

c. 1955 · Mountain road near Agrinio (Agrinion), Aetolia-Acarnania, western Greece, Greece

Western Greece. 1955. A truck drives along a mountain road near Agrinio. Two people ride inside, the driver and a hotel manager. Something luminous flies overhead. Then the engine stops. That is nearly all that survives. One sentence of about twenty words, first printed in Flying Saucer Review in London and later filed by Richard Hall among the engine-stopping cases of The UFO Evidence. No names. No exact date. No photographs. Yet the Agrinio truck has kept its place in the long catalogue of vehicles that fell silent beneath something glowing in the sky.

Context

Greece in the mid-1950s was no stranger to strange lights. In 1954 the country had lived through a wave of more than 15 sightings. Researcher Thanassis Vembos later documented US-backed balloon drops over Greece in 1954 and 1955, known as Operation VETO.
