thunderbird

Term 6 stories, 1886 to 2002

A giant bird. That is the thunderbird, as the archive's witnesses describe it. The Tombstone case of 1890 is often called the earliest recorded encounter, and it became cryptozoology's best-known lost photo. In 1948, sightings around St. Louis and Alton were later presented by Loren Coleman as the start of the modern Thunderbird flap, the main Illinois wave before Lawndale in 1977. Then came Togiak and Manokotak in 2002, which became a fixture of modern thunderbird lore. In January 2018, a witness in Juneau saw a jet-black bird five times the size of an eagle.
