Lawndale

Place 3 stories, 1948 to 1977

A small village in Logan County, Illinois. The Lowe family home stood beside open fields near Kickapoo Creek. Monday, 25 July 1977. Ten-year-old Marlon Lowe was reportedly lifted by one of two black birds with white neck rings, and his mother, Ruth Lowe, intervened. The Lawndale Thunderbird Attack on Marlon Lowe became the centre of that summer's Illinois big bird scare. Days later, Texas John Huffer filmed two large birds at Lake Shelbyville, and the earlier St. Louis and Alton flap of 1948 is remembered as the main wave before Lawndale.
