Santa María

Craft 4 stories, 1492 to 1980

Columbus's flagship on his first voyage west. On the night of October 11, 1492, the Santa María sailed with the Pinta and the Niña toward Guanahani. Around 10 p.m. the Admiral stood on her sterncastle and saw a light, too faint for him to call it land. Weeks later her story ended. On 25 December 1492 the Santa María was wrecked, and La Navidad was founded. Columbus carried on along the coast of Hispaniola, where the mermaid sighting near Monte Cristi followed.
