Deception Island

Place 3 stories, 1965

An island in the South Shetlands, in the Antarctic. In the southern winter of 1965, three nations kept stations there: Argentina's Destacamento Naval Decepción, Chile's Base Presidente Pedro Aguirre Cerda at Pendulum Cove, and the British Base B at Whalers Bay. In July 1965 these bases reported coloured lights for about two hours. A CIA cable spoke of red, green and yellow flying saucers. The Argentine Navy's communiqué of 6 July, later scaled back, opened a run of reports that continued with the Río de la Plata sightings and formed the backdrop to the Adhara Observatory lunar-transit photographs.
