House Committee on Science and Astronautics

Organisation 2 stories, 1950 to 1957

A congressional committee, and the stage for one remarkable day in 1968. July 29, 1968. The House Committee on Science and Astronautics held its Symposium on Unidentified Flying Objects, and atmospheric physicist James E. McDonald came to testify. He brought cases with him. The 1950 TWA Flight 117 sighting over Goshen, Indiana, filed as Case 7 under a question about why pilots supposedly never see UFOs. Seymour L. Hess's Flagstaff disk, offered as proof that trained scientists report them too. And the 1957 Tamaroa power failure, which entered the congressional record as a puzzling coincidence.
