Ground Observer Corps

Organisation 4 stories, 1953 to 1958

Civilian volunteers. Their job was to watch the skies for enemy bombers. In the summer of 1953 the Ground Observer Corps kept a post at Black Hawk, South Dakota, about 10 miles west of Ellsworth Air Force Base, during the Ellsworth radar-visual case. In Ohio, on the evening of 24 May 1955, tower observer Mrs. Frank Whitecotton reported four flying saucers passing over in formation, and Herbert Clark of the Corps later passed Robert Hunnicutt's Branch Hill report to Leonard H. Stringfield of CRIFO. In 1958, after the Loch Raven Dam encounter, Philip Small and Alvin Cohen called the Corps from a phone booth. Nothing came of it.
