An Iowa newspaper. It broke the story of the Van Meter Visitor. 4 October 1903. Under the byline of H. H. Phillips, its headline read "Town of Van Meter Wrought Up Over a Fishy Story." The paper described a monster emerging from an abandoned mine with a smaller companion, shrugging off a score of shots. The St. Paul Globe reprinted the account a week later, and the New York World carried it too. On 6 October the Des Moines Daily Capital answered with citizens calling it pure fabrication.
