November 1969 · Werrington, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England, United Kingdom

November 1969. Late evening. A clear night over Werrington, a village east of Stoke-on-Trent. PC Trevor Blower was driving a marked police car when he was advised by radio to look for an unusual object heading in his direction. Moments later he saw it. A "V" formation of nine UFOs. No sound at all. An exceptionally high speed. A surface with a mother of pearl effect, colours swirling all around each other. Over the radio, another officer said he too had witnessed the lights. The next day six officers gave their accounts at Leek police station. Then senior officers advised them all to keep quiet.

Context

Werrington sits about 5 miles east of central Stoke-on-Trent, in the Staffordshire Moorlands. The A52 runs through the village to Cellarhead, where the A520 turns north to Leek. In 1969 the area was policed by the Staffordshire force. UFOs were already on local minds that month. On 27 November 1969, ATV Today aired a report on the 1967 Bentilee "UFO landing" in Stoke-on-Trent, featuring local investigators Roger Stanway and Tony Pace of Newchapel Observatory.
