Saturday, 12 March 1977. Around 7 p.m. the phones started ringing at Saanich police. Seven callers. All describing something in the sky near McKenzie Avenue. At about 9:30 p.m. Gilbert Murray and his wife were driving through Gordon Head when they saw it too. A "ball of fire". Others called it a bright yellow "tubular-shaped thing". Mrs. Murray ran to knock on the door of a house, to bring the people out to see it. Before she got there, her husband shouted. It had gone. It was not the only night. For about a week, Saanich and Victoria filled the Daily Colonist with reports of glowing, hovering, humming things in the sky.

Context

Early March 1977. Greater Victoria, at the southern tip of Vancouver Island. On Wednesday 9 March, teenage sisters Susanna and Maria Stratford were above the 2700 block of Richmond Road in Saanich when an object "dropped like a falling star and hovered about 30 feet from the ground." It was "big as a house". It hummed. "It was round and shiny with a bright red flashing light on top."
