Sighting record / 1970
New Year's Day, 1970. Before dawn at Cowichan District Hospital in Duncan, on Vancouver Island, practical nurse Doreen Kendall opened the curtains of an upper-floor ward. Outside the window hung a saucer about 50 feet across. It was lit from below. On top sat a glass-like dome. Inside stood two tall figures in dark, tight-fitting suits, before a panel of instruments. One slowly turned toward her. The other reached for a lever. The craft tilted, spun, and slipped silently away. Other nurses saw its lights leave. An RCMP officer could not explain it. Fifty-three years later, the Royal Canadian Mint put the scene on a coin. Within days, two local residents said it had been a party balloon.
