Saturday, 30 September 1978. About eleven at night. Eilir Hughes was driving down the road from Trevelin towards the Futaleufú dam, in the cordillera of Chubut, with farmhand Roberto Ferreyra. Suddenly a luminous disc crossed over the cab of the pickup. Hughes stopped. The object hung a metre above the ground, 20 to 25 metres across, glowing in colours "like a rainbow". Then it lifted off and followed the truck for two kilometres. Hughes went to the police. Back at the spot, Hughes said, Corporal Austin watched the disc move away, changing colour. The next evening, it came back.
Trevelin sits in the west of Chubut, Argentina, about 22 km south of Esquel. A road runs some 12 km from the town to the Futaleufú dam, a hydroelectric complex built between 1971 and 1978. That spring, Argentina was in the middle of a wave of UFO reports. A week earlier, near Pedro Luro, a rally car crew had reported an encounter of their own.
