July 1, 1997. Canada Day in Trail, British Columbia. At least two women stood on the bridge over the Columbia River, waiting for the fireworks. It was still daylight. The show had not yet begun. Then they saw three small lights above them. The lights quickly took off down the river, skimming just a foot or two above the water. They zig-zagged along the watercourse, heading eastbound, until they flew out of sight. The two women were strangers. They looked at one another in awe. Their story surfaced only in 2021, as a single uncited paragraph on Wikipedia.

Context

Trail sits on the Columbia River in the West Kootenay region of British Columbia. In 1996 the city counted 7,696 people. The river flows south from Castlegar, then turns east near downtown Trail and runs on toward the border with the United States.

July 1, 1997, was Canada Day. A fireworks show was planned for the evening. It was also the 85th anniversary of the Old Bridge, opened on July 1, 1912. The account does not say which bridge the witnesses stood on.

The sighting

Evening. It was still daylight. At least two women stood on the bridge over the Columbia River, waiting for the fireworks show. They did not know each other. Then they saw three small lights above them. The lights quickly took off down the river. They flew just a foot or two above the water. They zig-zagged along the watercourse, heading eastbound, until they flew out of sight. Eastbound at that point means downstream, following the channel.

The two strangers looked at one another in awe. They realized it was not part of the fireworks show. It had not yet begun. No shape is described. No colour. No sound is mentioned. No one is named.

A story without a paper trail

August 12, 2021. An anonymous editor added a short paragraph about the sighting to Wikipedia's list of UFO sightings in Canada. It carried no citation and no edit summary. Twenty-four years had passed. Later edits added the detail that it was still daylight and that the fireworks had not yet begun. A mirror on HandWiki, last edited June 25, 2023, preserves that intermediate version.

The conversational tone of the original, with its "looked at one another in awe!", hints that the writer may have been close to the event. Nothing confirms it. No 1997 newspaper report has been found. No photographs, no video, no report to an investigator or agency.

Explanations

No published source discusses the case, so any explanation is the archive's own suggestion. The leading candidate is birds. Swallows, nighthawks or gulls skim rivers at dusk with fast, zig-zag flight, and wings lit by a low sun can look like small lights. Insect swarms or bats are less likely, since three distinct objects moved together. Glints off spray or debris fit poorly, because the lights started above the witnesses. Early pyrotechnics or a hobby radio-controlled craft remain possible, though the women ruled out the fireworks and consumer drones were not common in 1997. The witnesses saw it differently.

Open questions

No record has surfaced from the RCMP, the National Research Council, Transport Canada or the Department of National Defence. Searches turned up no Trail entry for 1997 in Chris Rutkowski's Canadian UFO Survey, NUFORC or UFO*BC, though those databases have not been checked directly. The Trail Daily Times for early July 1997 remains unread.

The region has its own folklore. Zigzagging orbs over Cranbrook. Fiery orange balls arcing above Kootenay Lake. A diamond-shaped object over Kimberley in 1999. In Kennewick, Washington, a man reported three orbs over the Columbia River, but at night and stacked at about 2,000 feet. For now, the Trail lights belong to two strangers on a bridge, and to one paragraph that appeared 24 years later.
