July 1930. Somercotes, Derbyshire. In the old colliery terraces of Coupland Place, a group of miners stood talking late one evening. Then one of them called out. "Look, there's a woman coming up the garden." It was no woman. Witnesses described a misty figure about 5 ft 9 in tall, with a box-like head and eyes "like electric bulbs". It came out of the wall of a house. It followed. At least 20 people are said to have fled from it. For about a week, crowds gathered at night with sticks and dogs. The police suspected a practical joker. And the ghost had been seen here before. In 1926.

Context

Coupland Place stood off Nottingham Road in Somercotes, near Alfreton. Mid-19th-century terraced houses built for colliery workers, laid out in a small cross formation. Narrow entries. Gardens. Coal houses and pigeon houses. The ghost was not new to them. It had caused a big scare four years earlier, in 1926, during the coal strike.
