Tokyo. February 28, 1935. Behind the Sunamachi Police Station, stones began to fall on a small Kannon hall and the row house beside it. Lumps of rock and cement, some over two kilograms. Sometimes beer bottles. They came by day, between about 6:30 in the morning and 7:30 in the evening, with a pause around noon. Glass doors shattered. Tin roofs were holed. When crowds gathered, nothing fell. For about 20 days, police, a professor and a newspaper reporter tried to find the thrower. Then detectives took the hall-keeper away. The stones stopped. Nobody ever proved he threw them.

Context

Kitasuna-machi 4-chōme, Jōtō-ku, Tokyo City. Today it is Kitasuna, in Kōtō-ku. In 1935 a small Sōtō Zen hall stood here, the Busshin-zan Kannon-dō, kept by Morita Kyūzō and his wife. Beside it was a two-storey row house of three homes. The pig farmer Musashi Kyūzaemon lived there, with the factory worker Kaneko Yōsaku and the cardboard-box maker Kiso Tomoji. The Sunamachi Police Station was only some 70 to 90 metres away.
