August 1974. Culver City, California. A single mother named Doris Bither tells parapsychologist Barry Taff that three invisible beings are attacking her. Taff and his colleague Kerry Gaynor, field investigators at Thelma Moss's parapsychology lab at UCLA, go to see for themselves. They keep coming back for about ten weeks. A frying pan flies out of a cupboard. Small balls of light pulse and move through the room. The air turns cold and smells of rot. Then, in a corner of the bedroom, a lime-green figure of a man takes shape, seen from the waist up. The case became the novel and film The Entity. Its photographs are still argued over today.

Context

August 1974. Doris Bither approached parapsychologist Barry Taff, reportedly after meeting him in a Los Angeles bookstore. She was a single mother living with her children in a rundown wooden house in Culver City. Taff said it had been "twice condemned by the city."
