Somerset. June 1880. In a cottage at Coker Hill, a young woman went into a fit shortly after midnight. Then the knocking began. Blows, as if given on an empty box. Night after night it returned, louder each time. On Sunday, the 13th June, from 200 to 300 people crowded in and out of the house to hear it. At twelve o'clock they got what they came for. A 'perfect cannonade', heard distinctly in the roadway. 'You never saw people turn so pale in your life.' One man searched the room and found nothing. The woman, he was sure, had nothing to do with it. The village did not blame a ghost. It blamed a witch.
