Gary, Indiana. A rented cottage at 3860 Carolina Street. Late in 2011, Latoya Ammons moved in with her mother, Rosa Campbell, and her three children. Then the flies came. Large black flies, swarming the porch in December. Footsteps climbed the basement stairs. Wet bootprints appeared on the floor. By spring, a hospital nurse and a state case manager said they watched a 9-year-old boy walk backward up a wall. A veteran police captain who arrived a sceptic left saying "I am a believer." A priest performed three exorcisms. Sceptics answered with an old house's creaks, a springy mattress and a broken seat motor. The house is gone now. The argument is not.
